Covid-19 Cases Rise In India; Govt Issues Caution Over New Variants

Health experts recommend targeted boosters, stress Covid-safe practices

India’s active Covid-19 cases have increased to 7,121 after 306 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, according to the latest update from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday. Six people also died during this time.

Out of the six deaths, three were from Kerala, two from Karnataka, and one from Maharashtra. One of the people who died was a 43-year-old man with a weak immune system. The other five were older individuals who already had serious health issues, such as breathing problems and chronic diseases.

India is seeing an increase in Covid-19 cases, mainly due to new variants like LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and a newly found subvariant called NB.1.8.1. Health experts have advised against giving booster shots to everyone. Instead, they recommend focusing on high-risk people, such as the elderly, those with weak immune systems, and people with long-term health problems.

Experts are also reminding people to follow basic Covid safety rules—like wearing masks, washing hands often, and staying away from crowded places.

Because of the rising number of cases, the central government has sent advisories to all states and union territories, asking them to stay alert and prepared.

Doctors have also pointed out that it’s important to tell the difference between Covid-19 and other seasonal viruses, as they can cause similar symptoms like fever, tiredness, and trouble breathing.
